The highlight of Black History Month, however, came with Guerra & Partners’ sponsorship of the Black History Month Reception hosted by the George Edgecomb Bar Association and the Fred G. Minnis, Sr. Bar Association on February 28. The Reception was awe-inspiring as Doretha Edgecomb discussed the life and legacy of her late husband, Judge George Edgecomb, who became the first black judge in Hillsborough County in 1973 at just 31 years old. Judge Edgecomb died tragically just a few years later at the age of 33, but his short life created a legacy that transcends time. Mrs. Edgecomb shared intimate stories about the insurmountable obstacles the couple faced and how they worked to overcome them through their love of each other and their community. Judge Edgecomb was a trailblazer, and Mrs. Edgecomb discussed his journey after he graduated from Howard University School of Law in 1968 to becoming the first Black Chief Assistant County Solicitor, the first Black Assistant State Attorney, and the first Black judge for the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit.
Chemere Ellis, co-chair of Guerra & Partners’ Diversity, Equity & Inclusion committee, addressed the audience on behalf of the firm to discuss how George Edgecomb’s legacy inspires and motivates us to be the best versions of ourselves. Let us forever celebrate Judge Edgecomb’s legacy and the contributions he made to the legal field.
